I-69 bus crash victim is named

Authorities have identified the Fort Wayne man killed in a collision early Sunday on Interstate 69, south of the Goshen Road exit.

Christopher Grady Frey, 33, died at the scene of the crash, according to the Allen County Coroner’s Office. He was not wearing a seat belt, police said.

Frey was driving north on I-69 in a silver Chevrolet sport utility vehicle when he struck the back of a large, black school bus headed the same direction. The SUV then hit the center wall, and the bus continued north, police said.

The driver of a northbound pickup truck tried to avoid the wreck but lost control, spun around and hit the back of the SUV, police said.

The crash was reported at 3:31 a.m. Aside from Frey, no one else was hurt, police said.

Officers found the bus in the 9800 block of Coldwater Road, near East Till Road. The driver told investigators that at first, he did not realize the bus had been hit.

A passenger on the bus, which police described as a “party bus,” told the driver about the collision, and the driver stopped at the next exit and waited for the striking vehicle, but it never arrived.

Police said the bus driver will not face charges. His name and the name of the pickup truck driver were not released.

Frey’s death is the fifth traffic fatality in Fort Wayne and Allen County this year, the coroner’s office said. Investigators believe speed was a factor in the crash, police said.
