Archers put 3 on All-SAC 1st team

Concordia also places 3 on squad

– South Side, which has ruled SAC girls basketball for the past couple of years, put three players on the 2012-13 All-SAC first team.

The team was announced Monday and Archers on the first team were Ariana Simmons, DeJoyah Johnson and Brittni Clopton.

South Side has won 20 straight SAC regular-season games.

“The individual honors help to solidify that their hard work is recognized and appreciated from all levels,” South Side coach Juanita Goodwell said. “It sets well for them, but for our program it really pushes our girls to strive for more.

“It is something we take pride in to have girls recognized at that level for their performances.”

South Side has won two straight SAC regular-season and tournament championships. The Archers are 30-3 against SAC competition in all games the last three years. The Archers’ entire starting five were honored with Lakyn Gulley getting second team and Lynnia Noel at honorable mention.

“It helps us overall,” Goodwell said. “It is not just the five of them, but the team as a whole as South Side does get some recognition of their accomplishments over the years.”

Defending Class 3A state champion Concordia also placed three players on the team, Courtney Smith, Olivia Hahn and Dejour Young.

Snider (Meredith Shipman, Deja Wimby), Northrop (Aleah Swary, Quila Jackson) and Bishop Luers (Allison Butler, Addie Reimbold) all had two players honored. Bishop Dwenger’s Ally Christman was also on the first team.

It is the third straight year on the first team for Simmons and Swary. Shipman and Smith have been on the top team the last two years, with Johnson, Clopton, Hahn, Young, Wimby, Jackson, Butler, Reimbold and Christman on it for a first time.

The SAC will again send half of the league’s teams to the regionals after winning sectional titles last weekend. In the regional round are: South Side and Snider (4A), Concordia (3A) and Bishop Luers (2A). The Archers won their sectional title by beating host Homestead 54-53 in the championship game on two free throws by Gulley with 2.5 seconds left.

“Starting at 5 p.m. (Monday), they were right back to work,” Goodwell said. “I haven’t bothered them after they got done with the game. We told them to enjoy the weekend and get back to work at 5 o’clock.”
