While investigating a report of shoplifting at an outlet mall near Fremont, police found $9,000 worth of stolen purses and clothes in the trunk of a vehicle, according to the Steuben County Sheriff’s Department.
On Sunday evening, officers were sent to the Coach store in the Outlet Shoppes at Fremont, near Interstate 69 and the Indiana Toll Road. Employees gave a description of the alleged shoplifter and his vehicle, and soon afterward, Ashley police pulled over a vehicle matching the description, the sheriff’s department said.
Searching the trunk, police discovered purses and clothes, valued at $9,000. Security devices were attached to many of the items, leading police to believe they were stolen, the sheriff’s department said.
Darrell L. Allen, 19, of Dayton was arrested and booked into the Steuben County Jail on a felony theft charge. His bail was set at $5,000.
Allen may also face charges in Michigan because investigators learned that some items found in his vehicle had been stolen earlier that day from a store in Battle Creek, the sheriff’s department said.
