A discount retailer will “complement” the stable of stores at Jefferson Pointe when it debuts this summer, an official says.
Marshalls will move into a 25,000-square-foot storefront now occupied by Old Navy, which will relocate elsewhere at the shopping center. Marshalls’ parent company, TJX Cos. of Framingham, Mass., closed a Marshalls at Southgate Plaza last month.
The store offers discounted brand-name apparel, accessories and home merchandise.
“Marshalls will broaden and deepen the latest fashion styles at Jefferson Pointe,” Katrina Newman, marketing manager at Jefferson Pointe, said in a statement Thursday.
A spokeswoman for TJX Cos. could not confirm the deal but said stores typically employ 60 full- and part-time workers. The Southgate Marshalls, 334 E. Pettit Ave., had about 30 to 40 workers, spokeswoman Doreen Thompson said in November. Employees who lost jobs when the Southgate store closed would likely land positions at other TJX stores or receive severance, she said.
The Southgate Marshalls was previously one of the A.J. Wright stores owned by TJX Cos. The company said conversion costs were $12 million as the retailer renovated 91 locations and closed 71 others in February 2011.
Thompson said the decision to close the outlet less than two years later was the result of “assessing and reviewing our real estate strategies.”
John Dortch, president of the Fort Wayne Black Chamber of Commerce, said it sounds like the retailer was “using (Southgate) as a stopgap all along.”
“Other stores,” Dortch said, “are doing well in that area.”
Old Navy, meanwhile, will occupy a 13,000-square-foot site between Michaels arts and crafts and the Family Christian bookstore.
“The store will have a new look and feel the moment you walk through the door” Katie Fultz, operations manager at Old Navy, said in a statement.
“Old Navy will remain open until the move in early March.”
Jefferson Pointe is adding an additional 3,000 square feet to the present Old Navy building to provide more room for Marshalls, which occupied a similar-size space at Southgate.
