Son critically injured in jump from pickup

A Warsaw man was airlifted in critical condition Friday morning after jumping from a pickup truck south of Nappanee during an argument with his father, police said.

Sheriff's department deputies and emergency personnel from Nappanee were called at 5:41 a.m. to Kosciusko County Road 800 West just south of County Road 850 North.

When they arrived, they found Jerry Lee Charles Belcher, 21, unconscious with extensive head injuries, according to a written statement from the county crash investigation team.

It said the Nappanee EMS immediately requested the Med-Flight air ambulance to take Belcher to South Bend Memorial Hospital.

According to the driver, Johnny L. Belcher, 41, of Warsaw, and a backseat passenger, the father and son were heading to work in a Dodge Ram Quad Cab pickup as the argument became steadily intense. While the truck was going north on County Road 800 West, Jerry Belcher suddenly opened his door and jumped out from the vehicle, police said.

His father stopped the truck and found his son in the ditch-line area.

Jerry Belcher was still listed in critical condition as of 10 a.m. at South Bend Memorial Hospital, police said.
