The president of a Bluffton-based insulating business has acquired a former Scott’s Food & Pharmacy store and has begun making some repairs, but he has no definite plans for the location.
Businessman Robert Troxel acquired the 58,000-square-foot grocery at 5300 Decatur Road with initial plans for warehousing, but he is reconsidering the best use for the site.
We knew we had to put a new roof on it, said the president of J&R Products Inc., a business that provides numerous insulation parts and components to various customer groups. I was looking at using it in some warehouse capacity. Now, we’re taking another look at it.
Troxel did not rule out some sort of retail returning to the location.
The Allen County Building Department said the buyer of the Scott’s site paid about $150,000.
Cincinnati-based Kroger Co., parent of Scott’s, has invested $105 million in Fort Wayne since 2009, including buying shopping centers to expand and upgrade stores.
The company built two Kroger Marketplace stores locally. Kroger Marketplace at Coventry on the city’s southwest side opened in the fall. The other debuted in fall 2011 at 601 E. Dupont Road. In addition to typical grocery offerings, Marketplace stores sell linens, furniture, jewelry, toys and other items.
Kroger spokesman John Elliott said the vacant Kroger store across the street from the new and larger southwest Marketplace is being marketed aggressively. Another closed Scott’s store at 4522 Maplecrest Road is being marketed by CBRE Sturges for $1.8 million.
