SPCA adoption up 74%

The Allen County SPCA placed 819 pets in homes during 2012, up 348, or 74 percent, from 2011, the agency said today.

In a statement, Director Jessica Henry credited "the great partnerships we have in place, and we are particularly grateful to the national ASPCA for a grant we received to cover the cost of transferring felines from area-open admission shelters."

The SPCA admitted 839 cats and dogs during the year, 476 of which arrived from surrounding shelters, the statement said.

Belinda Lewis, director of Fort Wayne Animal Care and Control, said in the statement: "Working with our partner agencies has proven to save more lives."
