Intense fire claims life of county woman, 88

– An 88-year-old woman was killed in a fire Friday that destroyed a one-story home in northern Allen County.

Wanda June Ray died from thermal burns and smoke inhalation. Her death was ruled accidental, the Allen County coroner said.

Huntertown firefighters were called at 9:34 a.m. to the blaze at 14815 Auburn Road. As crews were en route, they received reports about a possible entrapment, Huntertown Fire Chief Mike Feely said.

Crews arrived within five minutes and found the home completely engulfed in flames. Firefighters attempted to get inside but were forced to fight the fire from outside, he said.

“It was a relatively small dwelling, a bungalow or log cabin-type of structure, and there was a significant amount of fire,” Feely said.

It took firefighters about 20 minutes to bring the blaze under control. It’s unclear what caused the fire, he said. Firefighters from the Fort Wayne, Northeast Fire District and Washington Township fire departments helped put out the blaze.
