1 dead in Auburn Road fire

An 88-year-old woman was killed in a fire Friday morning after flames destroyed her one-story home, officials said.

Wanda June Ray died accidentally from burns and smoke inhalation in the fire, the Allen County coroner's office said tonight.

Huntertown firefighters responded about 9:34 a.m. to a call about a structure fire at 14815 Auburn Road, Huntertown Fire Chief Mike Feely said.

As crews were en route to the location, they received reports about a possible entrapment, Feely said.

Crews arrived within five minutes and found the home engulfed by flames. Firefighters attempted to make entry into the home but because of the volume of fire were forced to fight the flames from outside, he said.

It took firefighters about 20 minutes to get the fire under control, Feely said.

Crews from the Northeast Fire District, Huntertown Fire Department and Washington Township Fire Department responded to the scene, Feely said. Three Rivers Ambulance Authority, the Allen County Sheriff's Department and the Allen County Coroner's Office also responded, he said.

The fire remains under investigation by county police, the coroner's office and the FAST team.
