Fort Wayne Community Schools has a partnership with city police to share the cost of school resources officers at each of the districts five high schools and one officer who floats among the middle and elementary schools.
Spokeswoman Krista Stockman said any school resource officer could help in any building in the event of a crisis.
People shouldnt assume our buildings are without armed officers, she said.
And while the officers are armed police, they are also in schools as a resource for students and families. The district would be in favor of officers at all its schools if funding were available, she said. Were not opposed to having police in our buildings, but the biggest issue is how do you pay for it? she said.
Stockman said the district would not be in favor of arming its teachers.
At this point its not something were interested in, she said. Wed prefer our teachers focus on educating students.
Resource officers at Southwest Allen County Schools and Northwest Allen County Schools are employed and paid by the Allen County Sheriffs Department, which receives about $48,000 from each school corporation to help pay for the positions.
East Allen County Schools pays $50,000 a year toward the salary of a New Haven police officer, who is based in its New Haven schools as a resource officer.
