Gun pointed at mom in carjack attempt

A West Lafayette man accused of trying to take a woman’s car at gunpoint in New Haven has been arrested, court documents stated.

Eric Bowman, 26 faces a preliminary felony charge of attempted carjacking.

The victim told New Haven police she was driving west on Lincoln Highway on Friday, and as she stopped for a traffic light at Hartzell Road, a van cut in front of her. A man got out of the van, approached her car and pointed a handgun at her, yelling, “Get out of the car,” court documents stated.

The woman’s passenger, an 11-year-old girl, jumped out of the car and ran toward a gas station shouting for help. The man then got back into his van and drove away, court documents stated.

The man, later identified as Bowman, told his mother that he had tried to carjack a woman. His mother called police and told them her son was at the Walgreens on North Clinton Street in Fort Wayne, court documents said.

Police found him there and arrested him. He was being held Monday at the Allen County Jail in lieu of $10,000 bail.
