DNR seeks shooter of protected bobcat

CRAWFORDSVILLE – State conservation officers in central Indiana are seeking the public’s help in solving the fatal shooting of a state-protected bobcat.

Department of Natural Resources Cpl. Blaine Gillan said the animal’s shooting was reported Thursday in Montgomery County, northwest of Indianapolis. He said the 29-pound bobcat died of a single gunshot wound to the abdomen.

Bobcats are protected under state law. Gillan said a special license is required to shoot a bobcat if it is a nuisance or for scientific purposes. He said he hadn’t received any reports of nuisance bobcats in the area.

Anyone with information about the shooting is asked to contact the DNR at 1-800-TIP-IDNR or www.in.gov/dnr . A cash reward is offered and callers can remain anonymous.
