Waynedale bank robber flees on foot; 2nd in weeks

– For the second time in less than two months, a bank on Fort Wayne’s southwest side was the target of a morning robbery.

A man walked into the Chase Bank branch at 2617 Lower Huntington Road, near Bluffton Road, at 11:19 a.m. Thursday and handed the teller a note demanding cash and making a threat, said Raquel Foster, a Fort Wayne police spokeswoman. No weapons were seen.

The man grabbed the money and ran out the door, going east and crossing Bluffton Road. Dogs followed the trail to a carwash, where the scent disappeared. Police believe the robber had a getaway car there, Foster said.

There were several customers in the bank at the time, but no injuries were reported, she said. Police released a surveillance photo of the robber.

The same bank was robbed Oct. 26 by two men who wore dark hooded sweatshirts and concealed their faces with black masks. The men, each carrying a handgun, approached employees as they were arriving for work in the morning and forced them inside.

One of the robbers struck an employee in the head with a handgun during the October robbery. The employee was treated at the scene for minor injuries, police said at the time.

The October robbery occurred before the businesses had opened, so no customers were present. No one has been arrested.

Undisclosed amounts of cash were taken during both holdups.

Anyone with information about the robberies is asked to contact the Fort Wayne Police Department at 427-1222 or Crime Stoppers at 436-7867, where a cash reward is possible.
