Te'o captures collects awards

Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te'o is crisscrossing the country this week for various award presentations.

And the senior collected his second postseason honor Monday.

Te'o was named the collegiate Butkus Award winner, giving Notre Dame a sweep of the award with Bishop Luers linebacker Jaylon Smith, an Irish recruit, won the high school version of the award. Te'o was honored with the ARA sportsmanship award last week.

Te'o, who also won the first high school Butkus Award, added a third postseason award later Monday night when he was named the winner of theBronko Nagurski Trophy, given to college football's best defensive player, in Charlotte, N.C.

Te'o's awards tour will continue throught week.

He goes to New York on Tuesday for the presentation of the Campbell Trophy, top scholar-athlete; then to Houston on Wednesday for the Lombardi Award, top lineman presentation; then to Orlando on Thursday for ESPN's "Home Depot Awards" show, where he is in the running for the Chuck Bednarik Award, defensive player of the year, and Maxwell Award, player of the year.

Te'o will likely go back to New York on Friday as a finalist for the Hesiman Trophy, and he ends his week in Newport Beach, Calif., where he is a finalist for the Lott IMPACT Award.

The 6-foot-2, 255-pound Te'o has a team-high 103 tackles, with 5 1/2 for loss, and seven interceptions.

Te'o received 83 points in the Butkus voting system. Georgia's Jarvis Jones was second with 54 points, followed by Alabama's C.J. Mosely (21 points) and LSU's Kevin Minter and Oregon's Dion Jordan tied for fourth.
