Couple accused of abusing adopted children

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – A Terre Haute couple is facing neglect and criminal confinement charges in what the city’s assistant police chief describes as the worst living conditions he’s ever seen children forced to live under.

The Tribune-Star reports (http://bit.ly/Tl2inU) that a 17-year-old boy told authorities he escaped from a second-floor window of the house where he says the two adults had tied their adopted children to beds, denied them food and abused them.

Thirty-nine-year-old Larry Russell and 35-year-old Nikki Lee Russell are scheduled to appear Wednesday afternoon in Vigo Superior Court for an initial hearing. Each is being held in jail on $100,000 cash bond. Court records did not show whether they had attorneys.

Authorities said five children, the youngest age 10, lived in the house.
