Victim of beating found bound and blindfolded

A blindfolded man with his hands and feet bound was found beaten and bloodied Sunday afternoon on a street east of downtown, Fort Wayne police said.

Officer John Chambers, a police spokesman, said medics took the man to a hospital in serious condition. His identity was not released.

A neighbor, who did not want her name used because she didn’t want to be involved, said she heard a person screaming “Someone, please help me!” and thought it was a joke.

After hearing a few more calls for help, the woman came outside and saw the man, who looked to be in his late 20s or early 30s, lying on Columbia Avenue near the curb, close to the corner of Loree Street.

The neighbor said the man’s hands were tied with an electrical cord and that his feet were also bound. Blindfolded with some sort of clothing, he appeared to be in pain and had a significant wound to his cheek, she said.

“There was blood coming from his mouth all over his shirt,” she said.

Another neighbor came to his aid, and police and paramedics were called to the corner about 4:15 p.m.

Chambers said the man was uncooperative with investigators, making it difficult to figure out what happened. The man may have been beaten during a robbery, but at what point the man was tied up and blindfolded, where the beating occurred and how he ended up on that corner remained unclear, Chambers said.

Sunday evening, police were trying to gather information about whoever beat the man, Chambers said.
