Irish No. 1 in BCS standings

Notre Dame is also No. 1 in the poll that can put them into the BCS championship game.

The Irish (11-0) took over the top spot when the BCS standings were released Sunday night. Notre Dame is .0064 percentage points in front of No. 2 Alabama (.9973-.9333) and .1210 in front of No. 3 Georgia (.9973-.8763).

The Irish were voted No. 1 in the Associated Press Top 25, which doesn't count in the BCS standings, and the USA Today coaches poll, which factors into the BCS, on Sunday afternoon.

The Irish can secure their spot in the national title game with a win at USC (7-4) on Saturday thanks to their 38-0 win over Wake Forest and last week's top BCS teams – Kansas State, which was No. 1, and Oregon, which was No. 2 – losing this weekend.

"I think there's clearly a sense of pride and accomplishment that we're … our football team is winning games," coach Brian Kelly said during his Sunday teleconference before the BCS standings were released. "I think that's what we're more focused on, not on the No.1, but the consistency of our program is really what I think there's a lot of pride in. And 19-2 in our last 21 regular-season games, those are the things that we talk about, consistency in this program. That's really what we spend our time thinking about.

"We've got to hit the pause button here and realize that we're not doing this to be No.1 for three or four days. We're doing this because we want a consistent program that is in the hunt every year. That's really the focus of this program."
