Smoky fire forces evacuation of Target store

FISHERS, Ind. – A smoky fire forced the evacuation of shoppers and employees from a Target store in suburban Indianapolis.

The Fishers Fire Department said the Tuesday morning fire in a rear storage room was put out when a single fire sprinkler activated.

No injuries were reported, and officials said the store was evacuated by the time firefighters arrived at the store along Interstate 69 just northeast of Indianapolis.

Fishers deputy fire marshal Ron Lipps said a large amount of smoke filled the building. He said investigators believe the fire was started by workers using a torch to repair a cardboard baler.

The store was closed while firefighters worked to remove smoke from the building and health department inspectors checked food in the store, Lipps said.
