SOUTH BEND – A report says the fourth death in Indiana from a fungal meningitis outbreak among patients injected with a recalled steroid occurred in St. Joseph County.

The county’s health officer, Dr. Thomas Felger, told the South Bend Tribune the victim was a 62-year-old woman.

Felger said St. Joseph County has had 11 of Indiana’s 51 confirmed cases.

All four deaths have occurred in northern Indiana. The health officer in adjacent Elkhart County has previously said three deaths occurred there.

The Indiana State Department of Health has said that six Indiana clinics – including one in Fort Wayne – received the tainted steroids. The other clinics are in South Bend, Elkhart, Columbus, Evansville and Terre Haute.

The tainted steroids have been traced to the New England Compounding Center of Framingham, Mass.
